Why ASI is bad for your business

We believe that only using ASI or PPAI search for your business is a bad idea.

Here’s why!

We have been a supplier for 20 years and there are some secrets about ASI that most distributors don’t know. It is important to know so you can make more sales and make more money.

Here are a few key things you need to be aware of.

#1 – When you see ANY search result it is PAID to be placed there by the supplier

When using product searches on ASI or PPAI you may not be seeing the best, most popular or most innovative products at all. You are simply seeing what was paid to be seen!

Suppliers pay on average 60K a year for product placement. A few years ago I bought half of 1 day a week’s banner. It cost $1500 PER DAY!

#2 – The average age of end users is 35 while the average ASI distributor age is 57

There is a disconnect in the age gap that is most apparent if Distributors ONLY use ASI and PPAI search.

As a supplier, every day I get inquiries from Distributors looking for “something their client found online!” The end user wants something unique and unusual. They don’t always want the same thing, again… and again. You need to look elsewhere!

#3 – If you only use ASI and PPAI search, what advantage do you have over your competitor?

It may seem obvious, but if you and the Distributor down the street get the same inquiry for the same general product what advantage do you have? Isn’t it then only down to price?

In the internet age, Distributors need an advantage to beat out their biggest competitor: the end user!

If you keep presenting the same old ideas as your competitor down the street you will continue to encourage the end user (remember they are 35 and web-savvy) to buy online and NOT from you.

“It’s time to think differently!”

How to sell the Folding Reusable Drinking Straw.

If you think that selling a $5 net drinking straw is a tough sell think again!

In fact there are folding straws on the market that sell for $30 or more… Check out this Kickstarter program that sold over 80,000 units at $30 a piece!

“The selling points on the folding straw is not all about the function of it, it’s about the emotional appeal of it!”

First point:

This all started with a Turtle video. The storyline is simple: ecologists and scientists working in Costa Rica come across a Turtle in distress. They pull it aboard and find a plastic straw stuck in its nose. WARNING: Video has disturbing images.

Second Point:

After over 30 million views of the video and a greater understanding of how billions of plastic straws were ending up in the oceans and staying undegradable for up to 5000 years, cities and countries banned the sale and use of disposable plastic straws.

Read about cities and companies banning straws including McDonalds!

Third Point:

It’s not about why would anyone pay $10 for a straw, but more importantly it’s about what it says about a brand to have their logo on a folding reuseable drinking straw.

Your client’s logo on a LAST STRAW says to the world that the client cares about the environment, is on top of the latest trends and lastly, but not least, they want to be seen as helping solve a recognized world problem and being a part of the solution!

Some Distributors say that “No One Will Use It!”

These distributors may be sort of right but at the same time COMPLETELY WRONG! Many people may not use it but millions will buy it!

The Last Straw folding reusable drinking straw will be a massive marketing statement for your clients. It will say to the world that they are an eco-friendly, trend-setting company. Who wouldn’t want to be this?

Delivery is 2 weeks and includes FREE SHIPPING and NO SET UPs!

If you’re paying set up fees you’re getting ripped off.

I am a long-time promotional products supplier and I am shocked that people are still charging and still paying for set-ups, run charges, color matches etc.

Stop it Now!

Let me let you in on a secret.

As a supplier of swag who sells to distributors I am going to tell you now that you should never, ever, pay for set ups, run charges etc. It is a scam.

Issue #1

When was the last time you bought blanks and decorated them yourselves? Never. You always want it logo’d!

Issue #2

If issue #1 is true then why don’t suppliers just price out the product with a logo on it? They already know you’re going to want it with a logo!

Issue #3

Here’s where the suppliers who charge will say, “well…there’s a cost difference for 1,2,3 or 4 colors.” I say Bullshit!

I tell you this, the cost difference is so small that if a supplier can’t charge you an all inclusive logo cost or better yet an all inclusive product with logo cost regardless of how many colors you need then they are not very informed or  are playing the game as seen in the next issue, #4.

Issue #4

Suppliers who charge run fees, color matching etc. do this for 2 reasons…..1 to make more money and 2 to make their product appear less expensive than it really is!

Issue #4

Confusion to the client. (yes I know I used 4 twice…thought I would confuse you) Not only are these charges unnecessarily extra but they are coded on idiotic numerals like a G! This is just confusing and a time-waster.

Issue #5

Some charges are real and should be charged. When there is a real cost and its a significant one, go ahead and charge it. On our custom shaped flash drives for instance we pay $80 to the factory in China for the mold. Guess what, we charge our customers $80. I think that’s fair.

Issue #6

Make it easy on the customer. I can’t tell you how many clients I have spoken with who say they spend about 20 minutes costing out a job! 20 Minutes! Are you nuts!

The costing of the job should take 1 minute, the other 19 minutes you should be selling something else, high-fiving the guy in the cubicle next to you or rooting around on YouTube. You should get from the supplier a price. one, all inclusive price, you then would do your mark up on it and send it to the end user. Badda bing badda boom, done!

And on that note ,if you are sending a quote to customers with run charges, color matches etc….How do you think they feel about that?

In closing, I am sure there will be some of those out there who think I am nuts on this issue and that it is ok for all of these ridiculous charges. To you I say the following………You are wrong!

Below is an example of how it should be. Coded on a C to include shipping to your door and 1,2, 3 or even 4 color process logo. No extra charges! How easy does that make it!

Stop Paying Too Much for Promo

Attention Promotional Products Distributors. Why are you paying too much for your Promotional Products?

Now that the world of business is much smaller, Chinese factory’s are faster and international freight is less expensive why do you continue to buy your promotional products the old-fashioned and expensive way?

Overpaying Problem #1

Inventory in a big Stateside warehouse is a bad idea! The old days when buying in bulk from China and shipping to a central US warehouse make no sense any more. Here are the reasons.

A) Clients want fresh ideas. Buyers are less and less ordering repeats of the old tried and trues! The days when people ordered the same T-shirt/Mug and got the same imprint on them each April ARE MOSTLY OVER! With this fact in mind the idea that the best way to buy both on price and innovation is to buy from some giant warehouse is simply wrong. The reason are complex but I will try to explain.

B) If clients want new ideas all the time (which they do) then the old style swag (ie pens/mugs/T’s) sits on the warehouse shelf unsold. Ask yourself this…How many Fidget Spinners are on suppliers shelves NOT SELLING?

C) When a slow selling inventory product goes unsold the cost of that unsold inventory gets placed upon more popular selling items. In short the best sellers carry additional costs to off-set the cost of slow sellers.

D) if you are buying from the same place as everyone else then you are selling at the same price as everyone else. If true, what is your competitive advantage? If you want to create a sale that stops your client from either shopping online or bidding you out, stop selling the same old thing as everyone else!

LIke what you have just read….find out more!

Want to know more about buying smarter? Then you should call us at 1-888-908-1481 or email us. We know what we are doing, we know how how to “do cool” and we are your secret supplier you want to know!
